Bird Surveys
Why Are Bird Surveys Needed?
All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife Acts (1976 to 2023). It is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird, or to take, damage or destroy the nest or eggs of a wild bird. Planning authorities routinely require bird surveys for developments that could affect nesting or foraging habitat.
Our Bird Survey Services
Breeding Bird Surveys
Standardised breeding bird surveys following Bird Survey Guidelines methodology. Multiple survey visits during the breeding season (April–July) to record species presence, territory mapping and breeding evidence. Required for larger developments, wind farms and sites with significant bird habitat.
Wintering Bird Surveys
Assessment of wintering bird use of a site, including waterfowl, waders and ex-situ habitat associated with Special Protection Areas. Wintering bird surveys are carried out between November and February and are particularly important for sites near SPAs designated for overwintering species such as Brent Goose, Whooper Swan and Golden Plover.
Barn Owl Assessments
Assessment of buildings and landscape for Barn Owl presence or suitability. Barn Owl is a Red-listed species in Ireland and is particularly sensitive to building renovation, demolition and changes in agricultural practice.
Pre-Works Nesting Bird Checks
Pre-clearance checks for nesting birds prior to vegetation removal or demolition works. Required where works are scheduled during the nesting season (generally 1 March to 31 August). These checks ensure compliance with the Wildlife Acts and avoid costly project delays.
Chough and Coastal Bird Surveys
Specialist surveys for Chough (Annex I species) and other coastal breeding birds for developments on or near coastal sites. Chough are particularly sensitive to disturbance during the breeding season.
