Protected Species

The Shannon Estuary supports Bottlenose Dolphin (the only resident population in Ireland) and is critical for wintering waterbirds. Lesser Horseshoe Bats are present, particularly in association with older structures and woodland. Otter populations are strong along the Shannon and its tributaries.
