Rare Species Surveys
Specialist Surveys for Protected Species
Many development sites support species that are protected under Irish and EU law beyond the commonly encountered badger and bat species. We carry out specialist surveys for a range of rare and protected species to ensure your development meets all legal obligations.
Habitats Directive Annex II Species
Surveys for species listed on Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive, including otter, Kerry slug, Killarney fern, marsh fritillary and freshwater pearl mussel. The presence of these species near a development site can trigger the requirement for a Natura Impact Statement.
Flora Protection Order Species
Surveys for plant species protected under the Flora Protection Order (2022). It is an offence to cut, uproot or damage any protected plant species, and planning authorities may require a botanical survey where protected flora is likely to occur.
Red-Listed Species
Assessment of site suitability for species on Ireland's Red Lists, including amphibians (common frog, smooth newt), red squirrel, pine marten and Irish hare. Whilst Red List status does not confer the same legal protection as the Wildlife Acts, planning authorities increasingly expect impacts on Red-listed species to be assessed.
Invasive Species Surveys
Identification and mapping of invasive species on your site, including Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed. We advise on management measures to comply with the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011. Third Schedule invasive species must be managed to prevent their spread — an invasive species survey is often required as part of ecological assessments for planning.
