Natura Impact Statement
Detailed Stage II assessment with mitigation measures when significant effects on Natura 2000 sites cannot be excluded at screening. Thorough analysis that satisfies planning authorities.
What is a Natura Impact Statement?
A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) is the applicant's contribution to the Stage II Appropriate Assessment process. It is required when AA Screening (Stage I) cannot exclude the possibility of significant effects on Natura 2000 sites (SACs or SPAs). The NIS provides detailed analysis of potential impacts and sets out mitigation measures to ensure the integrity of the affected sites is not adversely affected.
An NIS must be comprehensive, scientifically robust, and address all qualifying interests and conservation objectives of the relevant Natura 2000 sites. It must demonstrate, beyond reasonable scientific doubt, that the development will not adversely affect site integrity.
Our NIS Reports Include
Detailed Impact Assessment
Comprehensive analysis of direct, indirect, and cumulative effects on qualifying interests and conservation objectives.
Mitigation Measures
Specific, implementable measures to avoid or reduce impacts — construction management plans, buffer zones, timing restrictions, and monitoring.
In-Combination Effects
Assessment of cumulative impacts with other plans and projects, including review of local development plans and existing permissions.
Residual Impact Analysis
Demonstration that, after mitigation, no adverse effect on site integrity remains.

An NIS is needed when AA Screening identifies potential significant effects that cannot be excluded. Common triggers include developments with direct hydrological connectivity to SACs, projects adjacent to or within SPAs, schemes involving significant land use change near Natura 2000 sites, and larger residential or commercial developments in ecologically sensitive areas.
We advise at the quotation stage whether NIS is likely to be needed, saving you time and avoiding unnecessary costs. In many cases, we can prepare both screening and NIS concurrently to maintain your project timeline.
